A new study published in Nature Medicine links sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), like soda and energy drinks, to over 3 million new cases of diabetes and heart disease annually, with developing countries facing the greatest burden.

Here’s why these drinks are so harmful and what experts recommend to reduce their global consumption.

The Global Impact of Sugar-Sweetened Beverages

SSBs, including sodas, energy drinks, and sweetened teas, have little to no nutritional value but are loaded with sugar. The study highlights:

  • 2.2 million new cases of type 2 diabetes and 1.2 million cases of heart disease linked to SSBs annually.

  • SSBs account for 9.8% of diabetes cases and 3.1% of heart disease cases worldwide.

  • In developing nations like Mexico, Colombia, and South Africa, these beverages contribute to over 20% of diabetes cases.

“Beverage companies are aggressively targeting developing markets, fueling an epidemic of diabetes and cardiovascular disease,” said Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, lead author of the study.

From Stress to Strength: The Mental Benefits of Exercise

Why Are Sugary Drinks So Harmful?

  1. Rapid Sugar Absorption

Unlike solid foods, liquid sugars are digested quickly, leading to blood sugar spikes without satisfying hunger. This can increase overall caloric intake and promote weight gain.

  2. Nutritional Void

SSBs are calorie-dense but lack essential nutrients like fiber, protein, or vitamins. A single can of cola has 138 calories but offers no nutritional benefit compared to a similarly caloric snack like cookie dough.

  3. Long-Term Health Risks

Regular SSB consumption has been linked to:

    • Obesity and metabolic syndrome

    • Insulin resistance

    • Poor mental health and cognitive function

    • Chronic diseases like asthma and liver cancer

How to Start Losing Weight

Reducing Sugary Drink Consumption: What Can Be Done?

Personal Choices

  • Opt for healthier alternatives: Choose water, unsweetened tea, or sparkling water. Even diet sodas, while not perfect, are a better option.

  • Reduce gradually: Cutting back on SSBs may cause withdrawal symptoms. Transition slowly and prioritize natural sugars from fruits.
